Welcome to The Money Pit Costuming Hub! You'll notice that things are a little sparse and that the plastic is still on the couch but never fear, we're working hard to get content added here for you. While we work on the construction side of things, please feel free to introduce yourself and toot your own horn! I know, I know, society frowns on tooting of all kinds, but friends this is exactly the time and the place. Let me help start things off with some questions for you to consider answering:

I'll start out:

What brings you here? My friends and I wanted to create a space for our Alberta Costuming Community to learn from one another.

What do you hope to learn? I hope to learn as much as I can. I'm a firm believer in there being something for everyone to learn and something that everyone can teach regardless of where you are in your costuming and prop making journey

Are you new to costuming and prop making or have you being doing it for a looooong time? Emphasis on the loooooong time. I have been costuming since I was in elementary school. Then I moved on to making Halloween costumes for all of my friends. And then....22 years ago I decided to make my first Boba Fett to wear to a Halloween party and I met a couple of members of the 501st Legion. I became a member that year, the first 12 of us started Badlands Squad and two years later we were large enough to become our own Garrison. I was varying staff positions over the years from Squad Leader to Garrison CO to Legion Captain of the Guard and for a brief period of time the Legion XO. In 2014 I became the Commanding Officer of the 405th Halo Costuming and Prop Making Community. I've also been a staff member at The Replica Prop Forum and on The Dented Helmet.

What's the one thing you are the most proud of having made? A costume? Dinner for friends? The world's best mix tape? (Yep, I'm dating myself with that one) While I will always be my own worst enemy, I do have two costumes that I'm really proud of. The first is my Zam Wessell (she's the purple Bounty Hunter in Attack of the Clones). I started building it in 2009 and it's still not finished BUT I learned more with that build than on any other single build I've done to date. The other costume is my Queen of Hearts from the Tim Burton movies. That one also took me several years to assemble the parts for it. The most troublesome part ended up being so worth the wait.

WHY are you proud of that? For both of them I am proud of not giving up. Many times they seemed impossible for a zillion different reasons but I took my time and kept working.

What's one skill you feel very confident with? I feel my comfort level with sewing is high. I had my first sewing machine around age 10. But having said that, I'm not a technical sewist. I haven't taken any formal training and a lot of stuff I just wing. So there always more to learn.

What's one skill that seems to allude you? Most anything to do with yarn. I refer to myself as Yarn Impaired. I can knit but just basic garter stitch. Let's not even talk about crochet.

What's your dream costume or prop? Without a doubt it's the three Queen Amidala costumes from The Phantom Menace. The red Throne Room, the grey one with Japanese styling and the Senate costume with the handle bar looking hair piece.

What's holding you back from having that dream costume or prop? Me. That's what. My very own brain. But, I intend to tackle all three of them here with you all. I recently purchased a 3D printer so I can print up the detailed pieces for each of the head pieces and now I have no excuses left.

So on with the questions;

What brought me here was one day Fangs and I were have lunch and an adult beverage and decided there was a place for a local costuming group that was all inclusive, and here we are.

What I hope to learn would take me a long time to write that list. There is always so much to learn and I am so far behind, especially the technical stuff. Electronic and 3d printing at the top.

I have been costuming for a long time. My grandmother and I would sew costumes for my dolls starting when I was in grade 4. I was a tom boy so they were things like GI Joe fatigues.

The costume I am most proud of is the Skekssi Chamberlain from Dark Christal. He turned out far better than I thought he would. It was my first time creating a different body shape and it worked. That got me started on doing costumes with different body shapes. I did the Mondoshawan from Fifth Element. I loved how he turned out.

The skill that alludes me is the same skill I want to learn, Electronics. To be able to do lights, sounds and movement is amazing.

What is holding me back is that I'm not a technical person and a lot of it sounds Greek to me.

I very much look forward to this community and seeing what we can all do for and with each other.

What brings you here?
Angela did! This seemed like an inclusive place connecting various aspects of the costuming community I’m part of.

Are you new to costuming and prop making or have you being doing it for a looooong time?
I’ve been making costumes for about 20 years. I remember being the kid of the group, and it still feels awkward being considered a veteran costumer now.

What's the one three thing(s) you are the most proud of having made?
My Tolkien-style dwarf costume inspired by the Hobbit movies was some of my most challenging work. Also Dovahkiin from Skyrim, and my Mandalorian armour.

WHY are you proud of that?
They exemplify my greatest talent, which is my leatherwork.

What's one skill that seems to elude you?
Anything that requires a computer to make happen.

What's your dream costume or prop?
A custom Wookiee Jedi.

What's holding you back from having that dream costume or prop?
Time and money
